In medieval times, those who embarked on the Way didn’t have the wide variety of amenities and hospitality services that are available for modern-day peregrinos. After long days of walking through poorly signaled paths, enduring unpredictable weather and treacherous terrain, many primitive pilgrims would arrive at the end of their route stages either extremely tired or sick. To help motivate and lift up the spirits of these weakened travelers, the Benedictine monks in charge of the Camino’s hostels and hospitals would welcome them with a big cup of red wine.


The vineyards of this northern area of Spain have been producing high-quality wines since the XII century and Bodegas Irache — established in 1891 — is probably its most prestigious winery. To honor the ancient Xacobean tradition, the kind owners of the winery built a wine fountain exclusively for pilgrims on one of the walls of the ancient 

Since 1991, every passing pilgrim has been welcomed to fill their flasks with some refreshing Galician wine...and the best of all is that it’s completely free! The fountain is open from 8 am to 8 pm every day of the year and it's refilled daily with more than 100 liters of young wine that come directly from Bodegas Irache's cellars.

While you enjoy your wine and recover your energy, we recommend you look up and read the inscription that’s written on the wall above the fountain. We’re sure it will fill you with encouragement to take on what’s left of this unforgettable adventure: "Pilgrim! If you want to reach Santiago with strength and vitality, take a sip of this wine and toast to happiness".

1. If you want to feel like a true medieval pilgrim, drink your wine directly from a scallop shell.

2. If you feel dehydrated or are not of legal drinking age, the fountain has a second tap that pours fresh water to quench your thirst.

3. If you want to commemorate your visit with more than just a photo, go to the Wine Museum (on Saturdays and public holidays) or to the offices of Bodegas Irache (on weekdays) to stamp your Pilgrim Passport with a special Wine Fountain credential.

4. If you want to see what the fountain looks like before you visit it, 

 that transmits real-time images from the Irache Monastery.

En la época medieval, quienes emprendían el Camino no disponían de la gran variedad de comodidades y servicios de hospitalidad a los que tienen acceso los peregrinos de hoy en día. Tras largas jornadas caminando por senderos mal señalizados, soportando un clima impredecible y un terreno traicionero, muchos peregrinos primitivos llegaban extremadamente cansados o enfermos al final de las etapas de su ruta. Los viñedos de esta zona del norte de España llevan produciendo vinos de gran calidad desde el siglo XII y Bodegas Irache -fundada en 1891- es probablemente la vinería local de más prestigio. Para honrar la antigua tradición jacobea, los amables propietarios de esta bodega construyeron una fuente de vino exclusiva para peregrinos en uno de los muros del antiguo 

Desde 1991, todos los peregrinos que pasan por este pueblo pueden llenar sus petacas con un refrescante vino gallego...¡y lo mejor de todo es que es totalmente gratis! La fuente está abierta de 8 de la mañana a 8 de la tarde todos los días del año y se rellena diariamente con más de 100 litros de vino joven procedente directamente de las bodegas Irache.

Mientras disfrutas de tu vino y recobras energías, te recomendamos que leas la frase que está escrita en la pared de la fuente. Te aseguramos que te llenará de aliento y coraje para afrontar el resto de tu aventura: "¡Peregrino! Si quieres llegar a Santiago con fuerza y vitalidad, de este gran vino echa un trago y brinda por la Felicidad."

1. Si quieres sentirte como un verdadero peregrino medieval, te recomendamos que bebas el vino directamente de una concha de vieira.

2. Si te sientes deshidratado o no tienes la edad legal para beber, la fuente tiene un segundo grifo que vierte agua fresca con la que podrás saciar tu sed.

3. Si quieres conmemorar tu visita con algo más que una simple foto, acude al Museo del Vino (los sábados y festivos) o a las oficinas de las Bodegas Irache (los días laborales) para sellar tu Pasaporte Peregrino con una credencial especial de la Fuente del Vino.

While trekking through Navarra's section of the French Way you'll stumble upon Ayegui, a small village at the foot of Mount Montejurra and the home to one of the quirkiest hidden gems of the Way of St. James: the Wine Fountain.

With many options — there are more than 14 well-known routes — picking the right Camino for you and your group can feel overwhelming. In order to make your decision a bit easier, we present you with the first of our three-part “Choosing My Camino” series, where we give our expert insights into which Camino route you should embark on based on your personal interests.

If you’re in good shape and want your Camino to be challenging, the 

 is for you. Although this passage is considered the original Camino route and has been traveled since the 9th century, its physical difficulty prevents its popularity among the casual pilgrims of this day and age — only around 16,000 or 4.4% of pilgrims walk it each year. This route’s terrain is pretty rugged and most of its paths are unpaved and have cobbled or lose surfaces. During a demanding first section between Oviedo and Lugo, you’ll have to go through a sparsely populated mountain range 1,100m above sea level to descend into Galicia's mountainous hilly countryside. Going through this testing route is worth it: the athletic challenges of the Original Way are well rewarded with beautiful views and wild landscapes.

Are you a distance person? Test your body’s endurance by walking the full length of the 

 from Irún: with an approximate distance of 800 km, these are the two longest routes of the Camino network.

“As an avid hiker, I wanted to face some kind of physical challenge on my Camino, but boy was I caught off-guard while walking the Pola de Allanade - La Mesa stage of the Primitive Way. The continuous 8 km steep climb from the banks of the Nisón River up to Puerto del Palo was one of the hardest ascents I faced, but the climb rewarded me with some spectacular views of the Lugo mountains and its green valley. Spanish gastronomy is known globally as one of the richest in the world, so no matter what Camino route you choose you can be sure you’ll find many delicious local dishes to try. Nevertheless, the 

 stands out as a “foodie” favorite thanks to the culinary traditions of the northern Spanish regions such as the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Due to its proximity to the sea, there’s an abundance of fresh seafood throughout most stages of this route. Oysters with white albariño wine, polbo á feira (Galician style octopus), pil pil Cod or a shellfish platter of grilled navajas (razor shell), zamburiñas (variegated scallop), percebes (gooseneck barnacle), nécoras (velvet crab) and vieiras (scallops) are the best reward after a long day of walking. The Spanish north is also famous for its traditional preservation methods, producing some of the most coveted canned delicacies in the world such as the Galician mussels, Cantabrian anchovies, and the Basque bonito del norte (longfin tuna). If you’re looking for the most luxurious award-winning meals in Spain, five of the country’s eleven Michelin 3-star restaurants are located near the Northern Way route: Martín Berasategui (Lasarte-Oria, Guipúzcoa), Azurmendi (Larrabetzu, Vizcaya), Arzak (San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa), Akelarre (San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa), and Cenador de Amós (Villaverde de Pontones, Cantabria)

 also offers the widest variety of gourmet experiences and you’ll only have to slightly deviate from your route to find several restaurants featured in the prestigious Michelin Guide. Molino de Urdániz (near Roncesvalles), Restaurante Europa (Pamplona), Rodero (Pamplona), Cocinandos (León), El Capricho (near Astorga), La Lobita (Navaleno) and Casa Marcelo (Santiago de Compostela) are just some of the high-quality options that will surely indulge the rich palate of any food lover.

“I’m a massive fan of white wine and seafood, so it’s no surprise that the highlight of my Camino was enjoying a cold bottle of albariño and a dozen fresh Galician oysters to celebrate the end of my journey in Finisterre. If you favor beaches over mountains, the coastal route of the 

 is your best bet. Starting in Oporto and running parallel to the Galician Atlantic coast, it boasts beautiful maritime landscapes and picturesque coastal villages before joining the Central Route in the Galician town of Redondela. During this route you’ll be able to taste a rich seafood-based gastronomy — bacalhau (cod), sardinha assada (grilled sardine), and rissóis (shrimp turnovers) — and take a swim in blue flag beaches such as Playa América (Nigrán), Paria do Codesal (Pontevedra) or Praia de Loira (Marín). You can extend your beachy Camino after arriving in Santiago by walking the epilogue route of Finisterre and Muxía, where you’ll enjoy scenic views of coastal cliffs and the lovely white sand Praia Da Langosteira (Finisterre).

Fancy exploring the marvels of the Cantabrian Coast? From the 34 stages of the 

, only 12 run away from the sea. On this route, you’ll walk along the coast of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Remember that in the Sebrayo-Gijón stage you’ll have the option to deviate inland towards Oviedo and join the Camino Primitivo. If you want to keep enjoying the sea, keep following the coast all the way to Ribadeo. Playa de La Concha (San Sebastián), Playa de Zarauz (Guipúzcoa), Playa de Andrín (Llanes), Playa de San Lorenzo (Gijón) and Playa de las Catedrales (Ribadeo) are some of the most precious seaside gems of the Spanish north.

Si estás en buena forma y quieres que tu Camino sea un reto físico, el Camino Primitivo es el ideal para ti. Aunque esta ruta se considera el Camino de Santiago original — se lleva recorriendo desde el siglo IX — su terreno irregular y dificultad física hace que hoy en día su popularidad entre los peregrinos casuales sea baja: sólo unos 16.000 o el 4,4% de los peregrinos lo recorren cada año. El terreno de esta ruta es bastante accidentado y buena parte de sus senderos no están asfaltados. En un primer tramo montañoso y exigente (entre Oviedo y Lugo) deberás atravesar una sierra poco poblada, intercalando valles y picos con diferencias de hasta 1.100 metros de altura. A pesar de su dureza, este trayecto merece la pena: el superar los retos atléticos del Camino Primitivo traerá como recompensa algunas de las vistas y paisajes más impresionantes de la Galicia rural.

¿Eres de aquellos que cree que "cuanto más largo, mejor"? Pon a prueba la resistencia de tu cuerpo recorriendo íntegramente el Camino Francés (desde Saint Jean Pied de Port) o el Camino del Norte (desde Irún). Con una distancia aproximada de 800 km, estas rutas maratonianas son las más extensas de  toda la red del Camino.

"Elegí el Camino Primitivo porque, como ávido excursionista y aficionado al deporte, quería que mi camino fuera físicamente desafiante. Me sorprendió la dureza de la etapa Pola de Allanade - La Mesa. Los empinados 8km del tramo entre el río Nisón y Puerto del Palo es uno de los ascensos más duros a los que me he enfrentado nunca. La gastronomía española es conocida por los amantes del buen comer como una de las mejores y más variadas del mundo. Independientemente de la ruta del Camino que elijas, puedes estar seguro de que encontrarás platos tradicionales y productos locales de gran calidad. En nuestra opinión, el Camino del Norte destaca como destino favorito de los peregrinos "foodies" gracias a las ricas tradiciones culinarias del norte de España. Gracias a su proximidad al mar, en País Vasco, Cantabria, Asturias y Galicia abunda el pescado y el marisco fresco. Las ostras con vino albariño, el pulpo a la gallega, el bacalao al pil pil o una buena mariscada son la mejor recompensa tras un largo día de caminata. El norte español también es famoso por sus conservas de gran calidad: mejillones gallegos, anchoas del Cantábrico y bonito del norte vasco son de los productos enlatados más codiciados. En esta zona también puedes disfrutar de experiencias gourmet más lujosas de España. Cinco de los once restaurantes españoles con 3 estrellas Michelin se encuentran en los aledaños la esta ruta: Martín Berasategui (Lasarte-Oria, Guipúzcoa), Azurmendi (Larrabetzu, Vizcaya), Arzak (San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa), Akelarre (San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa), y Cenador de Amós (Villaverde de Pontones, Cantabria).

Si eres más de playa que de montaña, te recomendamos la ruta costera del Camino Portugués. Este trayecto comienza en Oporto y discurre paralelamente a la costa atlántica gallega antes de unirse a la Ruta Central en la localidad de Redondela. Las costa portuguesa-gallega posee hermosos paisajes marítimos, pintorescos pueblos costeros, y una rica gastronomía marina. No puedes dejar de probar el bacalao, la sardinha assada ni los rissóis, así como tampoco debes perderte bañarte en playas con bandera azul como Playa América (Nigrán), Paria do Codesal (Pontevedra) o Praia de Loira (Marín). Tras llegar a Santiago, puedes prolongar tu Camino playero recorriendo la ruta epílogo hasta Finisterre: los acantilados de la Costa da Morte ofrence las mejores vistas panorámicas de la costa española occidental y la preciosa Praia Da Langosteira tiene una de las arenas más blancas y finas del mundo.

¿Te apetece explorar las maravillas de la Costa Cantábrica? De las 34 etapas del Camino del Norte, sólo 12 discurren alejadas del mar. En esta ruta recorrerás la costa del País Vasco, Cantabria, Asturias y Galicia. Recuerda que en la etapa Sebrayo-Gijón tendrás la opción de desviarte hacia el interior, vía Oviedo, y unirte al Camino Primitivo. Si quieres seguir disfrutando del mar,  sigue pegado a la costa hasta que llegues a Ribadeo. Choosing Your Camino: Part 1

Pilgrims from all over the world have embarked on el Camino de Santiago for more than 1,000 years. Seven well-established main routes and several other lesser-known ones — each one with a different departure point, difficulty level, and walking length — make up a network of paths that all lead to the ancient Tomb of St. James at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

O Cebreiro is the first village of the Galician stretch of the French Way and marks the start of the main route's 25th stage. Founded in the IX century — just a few years after the discovery of Saint James' tomb — this settlement's raison d'etre has always been linked to providing hospitality services to the passing pilgrims.

The gems of O'Cebreiro are definitely its 

, a group of preserved traditional pre-Romanic houses that were still inhabited until the mid-20th century and now serve as an ethnographic museum that depicts the living arrangements of the locals during the medieval era.

O'Cebreiro also houses the Camino's oldest functioning medieval church and one of the only pilgrim's hospitals still standing.

With a population of fewer than 800 people, it's not uncommon for pilgrims to exceed the number of locals when the town gets overflown during spring and summer.

On the route from Triacastela to Sarria, you'll have to pick between two different variants: San Xil or Samos. While the former is considered the original path and it's preferred by most for both being 6 km shorter and boasting beautiful natural scenery, some pilgrims choose the latter as it passes by the Samos Monastery, a beautiful 6th-century Benedictine building that's a must-visit for lovers of history and architecture.

Many pilgrims choose Sarria as their Camino starting point as it's located just over 100 km away from Santiago, the minimum distance required to walk in order to obtain the precious Compostela certificate.

You won't only find pilgrims from the French Way walking the streets of Sarria: in this town, the French Way converges with the North Way, a route that starts in the Basque Country and runs along the Cantabrian coast before turning south into the Galician inland.

Sarria's old town is full of medieval houses and 18th-century palaces. It also has the largest concentration of hostels per square kilometer in the whole of Spain: more than 30 can be found along Rúa Maior, the village's main street.

The Portomarín that we know today is not the original version. Although its settlement at the foot of the Minho river dates back to the Medieval era, this historical village had to be refunded in the 1960s after the area was flooded during the construction of the Belesar dam. Many of its most important monuments — including the iconic Saint Nicholas Church — were relocated stone-by-stone to the new Portomarín at the top of the Monte do Cristo. To this day when, when the day is clear and the reservoir's water levels are low, you can still see the remains of the old Portomarín at the bottom of the valley.

If you look carefully at the river you'll see a series of peculiar V-shaped stone structures protruding from the water's surface. These are the famous "caneiros", the main tools used for the traditional fishing of the eel, and the primary ingredient of Portomarín's star dishes: local restaurants serve it in a wide variety of preparations including fried, stewed, or as the filling of the traditional empanada. To wash down the food there's nothing better than a good aguardiente, the other local culinary gem that's been made in the area with the traditional alquitar distilling stills for many centuries. This versatile digestif has a version to satisfy every taste: orujo cream and "licor café" for those who have a sweet tooth, or white orujo and "licor de hierbas" for the ones that prefer sharper and more hard-hitting alcoholic flavors.

Palas de Rei appears in the Codex Calixtinus — the original 12th-century guide of the French Way — as the final obligatory resting stop before reaching the Tomb of Saint James.

The Palas de Rei name — which literally translates to "royal palace" — originated from the fact that Visigoth King Witzia had his official residence at this location during the 8th century.

This quiet village, located in the Ulloa county of Lugo, is the house of the Castelo de Pambre, a perfectly conserved 14th-century military building that has been declared a monument of cultural interest and historical heritage by the Spanish authorities. The castle is a historic symbol of the ancient Galician Kingdom and was the central stage of many battles between local noble houses and social revolts like the Irmandiño Revolution.

From this point on pilgrims from the French Way and the North Way will be joined in their journey by those coming from the Primitive Way. This path starts from the Austrian city of Oviedo and is considered the original Camino route: it was first taken in the 9th century by King Alfonso II right after the discovery of Saint James' tomb.

Arzúa is also known as "the land of cheese" thanks to the Arzúa-Ulloa brand, a locally-produced cheese awarded with the prestigious Denominación de Origen quality seal and known in all of Galicia for its characteristic soft and creamy texture. slightly salty taste, and delicious milky aroma.

The dairy delicacy — along with the tasty local floral honey — has become a culinary staple of The Way and a very important part of the area's economy.

More kilometers of the French Way goes through the O Pino municipality — to which O Pedrouzo belongs — than any other in Galicia.

O Pedrouzo doesn't have as many monumental buildings as previous stops, but it does boast a wide variety of high-quality bars and restaurants. We recommend you try the traditional dish "zorza gallega", a pilgrim favorite made with locally sourced pork cut into small pieces and marinated in white wine, garlic, and red paprika. Accompany it with some tries of fried eggs and you'll have the last energy push you need before embarking on the final stage of this magnificent journey.

We hope that with this guide you'll see that these little villages with big personalities are more than just a port of call in your journey toward the Holy City of Santiago. Remember: travel, like life, is about the journey, not the destination!

Fundada en el siglo IX — sólo par de años después del descubrimiento de la tumba del apóstol — las tradiciones y cultura de esta comarca siempre han estado muy ligadas al Camino y a prestar servicios de alojamiento y hostelería a los peregrinos que lo transitan.

La atracción más popular de O'Cebreiro son las 

, un grupo de casas pre-románicas caracterizadas por su fachada de piedra y su techo de paja. Estas edificaciones fueron habitadas hasta mediados del siglo XX y hoy forman parte del Museo Etnográfico de O Cebreiro, institución que busca recrear los aposentos y educar sobre la forma de vida de las poblaciones medievales de Galicia.

En O'Cebreiro también encontrarás la iglesia medieval más antigua del Camino Francés (Iglesia de Santa María de la Real) y uno de los últimos hospitales de peregrinos de España que quedan todavía en pie en España (Santuario Hospital de Santa María la Real).

Con una población de menos de 800 personas, es habitual que hayan días durante los meses de primavera y verano — los más concurridos del Camino Francés — en los que el número de peregrinos itinerantes supera al número de lugareños.

En el trayecto de Triacastela a Sarria deberás elegir entre dos variantes: San Xil o Samos. Aunque la primera opción es considerada la ruta original y es la elegida por la mayoría de peregrinos al ser 6 km más corta y ofrecer unos paisajes boscosos preciosos, algunos peregrinos eligen la segunda variante ya que pasa por el Monasterio de Samos, una majestuosa edificación benedictina del siglo VI que es una visita obligada para los amantes de la historia y la arquitectura.

Muchos peregrinos eligen Sarria como su punto de partida en el Camino ya que se sitúa a poco más de 100 km de Santiago, la distancia mínima a caminar necesaria para obtener el codiciado certificado Compostela.

No sólo te encontrarás con peregrinos del Camino Francés caminando las calles de Sarria: en esta villa, esta ruta converge con el Camino del Norte, una ruta que empieza en País Vasco y bordea la costa Cantábrica antes de girar hacia el sur y adentrarse en el interior de Galicia.

En el centro histórico de Sarria encontrarás muchas casas medievales y palacetes del siglo XVIII. También ostenta la mayor concentración de albergues por kilometro cuadrado en toda España: más de 30 pueden encontrarse en la Rúa Maior, la vía principal de esta población.

Lo que hoy conocemos como Portomarín no es la versión original de este pueblo. Aunque su asentamiento al pie del río Minho data de la era medieval, esta villa histórica tuvo que ser refundada la década de los 60 luego de que esa área fuese inundada durante la construcción del embalse de Belesar. Muchos de sus monumentos más importantes — incluyendo la icónica Iglesia de San Nicolás — fueron trasladados piedra a piedra a una nueva ubicación en lo alto del Monte do Cristo. Hoy en día, cuando el cielo está claro y los niveles del embalse son bajos, todavía se pueden ver los restos del viejo Portomarín en el fondo del valle.

Si te fijas cuidadosamente en la superficie del río Minho, podrás ver una serie de estructuras de piedra en forma de V que sobresalen del agua. Estos son los famosos "caneiros", pequeños diques construidos para practicar la tradicional pesca de la anguila, principal ingrediente de la gastronomía local. Palas de Rei aparece en el Códice Calixtino 

— la guía original del siglo XII sobre el Camino Francés — como la última para obligatoria antes de alcanzar la tumba del apóstol.

El nombre de esta villa — que significa literalmente "palacio del rey" — tiene su origen en el hecho de que el rey visigodo Witiza tuvo aquí su residencia oficial durante el siglo VIII. 

Este callado poblado localizado en la comarca lucense de Ulloa es la casa del Castillo de Pambre, un edificio militar del siglo XIV perfectamente preservado que ha sido declarado monumento de interés cultural y patrimonio histórico por las autoridades españolas. El castillo es un símbolo del antiguo reino de Galicia y fue el escenario central de numerosas batallas entre las casas nobles y revueltas sociales como la Revuelta Irmandiña.

Desde este punto los peregrinos del Camino Francés y del Camino del Norte unirán sus caminos con los provenientes del Camino Primitivo. Este último es un Camino parte de la ciudad asturiana de Oviedo y es considerada la ruta original del Camino de Santiago, siendo recorrida por primera vez en el siglo IX por el Rey Alfonso II poco después del descubrimiento de la tumba del apóstol.

Arzúa es conocida como "la tierra del queso" gracias al producto Arzúa-Ulloa, un queso producido localmente y que posee el prestigioso sello de calidad Denominación de Origen, siendo conocida en Galicia y España por su característica textura suave y cremosa, su sabor ligeramente salad, y un delicioso aroma lechoso.

Esta delicatessen láctea — junto con la también popular mile floral local — ha convertido Arzúa en una parada obligatoria para los peregrinos más foodies y tanto su producción, distribución y comercialización tienen un gran impacto en la economía local.

La municipalidad de O Pino — a la que pertenece la pequeña villa de O Pedrouzo — posee más kilómetros del Camino Francés que ninguna otra en Galicia.

O Pedrouzo es un poblado más urbano y carece de la monumentalidad y misticismo de paradas anteriores. Sin embargo, al estar tan cerca de Santiago y ser una parada obligatoria en el peregrinaje, podrás encontrar muchos bares y restaurantes de alta calidad.

The Wine Way: 3 Unmissable Wine Regions To Visit on El Camino

The first person to walk the Camino was King Alfonso II of Asturias during the medieval origins of the jacobean pilgrimage. Legend says, around the year 820, the monarch decided to embark on a pilgrimage to Santiago after being informed by bishop Teodomiro about the discovery of St. James’ tomb. In a time without “mojones” or yellow arrows signaling the way, Alfonso marked the first route of el Camino by following the old rural paths that separated Oviedo (home of the Asturian kingdom royal residence) and what’s today known as Santiago de Compostela.

Legend says that after confirming the veracity of the Apostel’s remains, Alfonso The Chaste ordered the construction of a small chapel to safeguard and worship them. This building would with time evolve into the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela that today stands in the Plaza Obradorio of the Galician capital.

A modified route of the original Camino is still covered by modern pilgrims under the name of the Primitive Way, although other options with better infrastructure and more forgiving terrains (like the French Way or the Portuguese Way) have surpassed it in popularity.

The star of classics such as Billy Wilder's 

Shirley MacLaine is one of Hollywood's most revered performers. In 1994, while going through a hard time both in her personal and professional life, MacLaine was persuaded by her psychotherapist to go on the Camino de Santiago as a spiritual cure of sorts. The actress followed the prescription and embarked on the French Way departing from the Navarran village of Roncesvalles. On July 3rd of that same year, after 30 days of physical effort and contact with nature, the actress entered Santiago de Compostela as a transformed woman, having "found herself and God" along the way.

Such was the impact that the pilgrimage had on the Hollywood actress that in 2001 she published 

a book where she chronicles her relationship with the jacobean pilgrimage and the profound existential insights and spiritual ideas it imprinted in her. It contains some pretty new age ideas (MacLaine is known for her strong belief in reincarnation, once even assuring she was an Incan princess in one of her past lives), but nevertheless, the book has become one of the most popular Camino travelogues and has introduced the Camino to many Americans in the past 30 years.

One of the things that make the Camino de Santiago a unique and unforgettable experience is the distinctive characters you meet along the way. The legendary Zapatones — a name that loosely translates to “big shoes” — was probably the most iconic pilgrim you could find while walking the jacobean routes until his passing in 2015.

Born in the small village of Costa da Morte in 1954, Juan Carlos Lema Balsas was a sort of pilgrim by profession and could be found roaming Plaza de Obradoiro wearing the traditional attire of the medieval pilgrim: a long brown cape, a felt hat, several scallop shell ornaments, a leather saddlebag, and a big “bordón” (wooden shepherd's crook) with a small pumpkin hanging from it. For many years, a picture next to this white-bearded man became a staple of the pilgrim’s photo album next to other traditional snaps such as standing in front of the Santiago Cathedral or hugging St. James’ statue. Such was his popularity that he was photographed with celebrities such as King Juan Carlos I and the singer Julio Iglesias.

According to the legend, Zapatones used to have a very libertine and troubled life before being spiritually rehabilitated after walking his first Camino. Sadly, despite becoming a symbol of Santiago and one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, Juan lived most of his life destitute and earned a living thanks to the small change given to him by fellow pilgrims after taking a picture with him or hearing his stories.

La primera persona que recorrió el Camino de Santiago fue el rey Alfonso II de Asturias durante los orígenes medievales de la peregrinación jacobea. Cuenta la leyenda que, hacia el año 820, el monarca decidió emprender la peregrinación a Santiago tras ser informado por el obispo Teodomiro del descubrimiento de la tumba del apóstol Santiago El Mayor. En una época sin "mojones" ni flechas amarillas que señalasen el camino, Alfonso marcó la primera ruta del Camino siguiendo los antiguos caminos rurales que separaban Oviedo (sede de la residencia real del reino asturiano) y lo que hoy se conoce como Santiago de Compostela.

Cuenta la leyenda que tras comprobar la veracidad de los restos del Apóstol, Alfonso el Casto ordenó la construcción de una pequeña capilla para custodiarlos y rendirles culto. Este edificio evolucionaría con el tiempo hasta convertirse en la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela que hoy se alza en la Plaza Obradorio de la capital gallega.

Una ruta modificada de este Camino original sigue siendo recorrida por los peregrinos modernos bajo el nombre de Camino Primitivo, aunque otras opciones con mejores infraestructuras y terrenos de menor dificultad (como el Camino Francés o el Camino Portugués) lo han superado en popularidad.

La Estrella de Hollywood - Shirley MacLaine

, de James L. Brooks, Shirley MacLaine es una de las intérpretes más veneradas de Hollywood. En 1994, mientras atravesaba un mal momento en su vida personal, su psicoterapeuta convenció a MacLaine para que hiciera el Camino de Santiago como una especie de cura espiritual. La actriz siguió la prescripción y se embarcó en el Camino Francés partiendo de la localidad navarra de Roncesvalles. El 3 de julio de ese mismo año, tras 30 días de esfuerzo físico y contacto con la naturaleza, la actriz entró en Santiago de Compostela como una mujer transformada, declarando haberse "encontrado a sí misma y a Dios" durante esta aventura.

Tal fue el impacto que la peregrinación tuvo en la actriz de Hollywood que en 2001 publicó 

, un libro donde relata su estrecha relación con la peregrinación jacobea y las profundas reflexiones existenciales e ideas espirituales que marcaron su vida tras esta experiencia. Aunque contiene algunas ideas de corte New Age (MacLaine es conocida por su firme creencia en la reencarnación, llegando a asegurar en una ocasión que en una de sus vidas pasadas fue una princesa inca), el libro se ha convertido en uno de las guías del Camino más vendidas a nivel mundial y ha sido el primer contacto con la peregrinación jacobea de gran parte del público estadounidense durante más de 30 años.
